Choose your wine wisely

Some weeks ago I was invited to a dinner party and I found myself with the same dilemma I always have when I go to a friend’s house for dinner: what should I bring? You can ask the host and if you are lucky he or she will tell you what to bring to the party. If not, I for example, always go for a bottle of wine. Even if your friend tells you that you don’t need to bring anything he or she will really appreciate the gesture. I would avoid preparing a dessert or any other dish, seeing that you are going to a dinner party I assume the food is already included.

Listen and let your feelings flow

Life is special, I know it, you know it, everybody knows it. A time comes, sooner or later in which we all experience a kind of ‘inconvenience’, something we didn’t prepare for at all but just happened. We fall in love, we lose our job, we get married, we experience a new sensation, we get hurt, we feel lost or lose someone, etc. When something unexpected happens to me I like to write about it, give my feelings and emotions a place where they can relax and chill out for a while.

You define your internship

What is an internship? A chance to show yourself? Or a waste of time that takes part of your professional training? An opportunity to show who you are and what you can do or a professional training center camp to become the best copier and organizer in the world?

Yes it’s true that as an intern you will have to battle with a lot of stereotypes, do a lot of boring but nonetheless important work, finish assignments employees didn’t have time to finish or didn’t care to finish. But also remember that you need to define who you will be as an intern, a passive silent intern or an active entrepreneurial intern.
A company only works if each office functions efficiently. It’s like an assembly plant. If one office misses or forgets its task the complete assembly line will enter into lockdown. All this just to say that wherever you end up as an intern, you will be a part of the company. It is up to you if you want to be forgotten as the silent one or be remembered as the one to watch.

Now that my internship is over I can honestly say I look back to this period both satisfied and sad. Satisfied because I got to learn and discover a lot. Sad because it’s already over. It was really nice to feel useful, to share my knowledge, to learn from others and to have common goals, to receive positive criticism and to enjoy compliments for a job well done. Even if my internship only lasted for three weeks I feel I have grown on a professional and personal basis.

I am ready to find out more about the company where I did my internship. I want to get to know Fabbri 1905 worldwide: Italy, Spain, France, Germany, China, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico, the United States. Enter into the heart of Fabbri 1905 and discover what makes the famous Amarena cherry so attractive an desirable.

It was a nice learning experience with very helpful colleagues. Every question I had was answered, every doubt clarified. It’s true that I also had to do some “typical intern work” but thinking about it today, doing this so-called boring work has given me the chance to get to know the company better, get to know its weaknesses and its strengths and even more important the opportunity to find and elaborate some strategies to make my contribution to the company.

Never be scared, even as an intern, to share your ideas. You are an intern but don’t be a silent one, be someone with a voice, show them that you care, that you feel part of the family, that you are smart and eager to learn. But also remember that as an intern you are an outsider so analyze the best way to share your ideas. Be a good scout, find out how the company’s internal system works, who you need to talk to, how you do it and when you do it. Never overstep the invisible boundaries you have in front of you but find a way to work around them by being humble and smart.

You are here to learn. As an intern it may seem that everyone is your superior and in a way they are. You don’t know anything about your direct work environment, only the information you gathered online and from hear say. Listen carefully to everything, especially during coffee breaks and lunch pauses. Take notes when your new colleagues are explaining something to you, write down the tasks you have been assigned and prepare an agenda. Never be ashamed to say that for the moment you can’t accept any new tasks. I don’t know why but interns are often seen as a kind of superhero who can do everything. Remember your colleagues that you may look like a superhero, talk like one and act like one but that until further notice you are still a human being.

The key objective of an internship is to learn, once that stops something is definitely going wrong and you need to reposition yourself. Remember your superior and colleagues that you are very happy you are there but that you are there to learn and not only to relearn the alphabet by filing papers or to rediscover the different ways to make a perfect cup of coffee. Most internships only earn you intellectual earnings, maybe also a job opportunity who knows. But like someone recently told me, remember that while the company may be assessing you, you are also assessing them. It’s up to you on how you will define your internship.

Communicate and you shall arrive to your destination

Seven years have gone by since the crisis started, seven years since my mother died. The world is going from bad to worse and we are all seeing it, experiencing it and trying to do our best to fake we care about what is going on. The world seems like a bubble about to burst.

I moved on, the crisis hasn’t. Why is society still trying to use the crisis as an excuse to cover up everything that is going wrong. Why do we feel guilty and want to try to save the world when we can’t even save ourselves. We need to be strong, united, all nations, all layers of society, all colours and all religions in the world. Yes it’s true that there are less and more fortunate people in the world but that’s not an excuse to steal, attack and murder. We can be jealous, hate, be angry, blame the world but we can’t attack someone else to overcome these feelings. No God, no religion allows this.

Maybe it’s easy for me to say this, maybe I am more fortunate than others but remember that my luck has cost me a loved one and believe me when I tell you that I would trade everything to have that person back. But I will never hurt someone because I am hurt, I will never take something away from someone else because I don’t have it. Life is not easy but I can assure you that it will get better, there will be good moments and bad ones. And strangely enough the web can help you sometimes.

I, for example, four months ago bumped into a website offering free courses financed by the District where I live in and now I am doing an internship at Fabbri 1905, a well known company in Bologna and in the world. Life is an adventure and I think I have just started a new one. Let’s see where it takes me. I want to dedicate some space on our blog to my internship, my experience, in the hope that my achievements and mistakes will help you where needed.

When I left my job people called me crazy but I did it anyway, I followed my dream. I wanted to communicate with people, share a message, grow professionally and socially, see the world without any regrets. I had to take this step and I am glad I did. The place where I was working is near bankruptcy so I think I’ve made the right choice. But it’s not easy. I am a foreigner who has studied many languages living in a city where I can find minimum 200 native speakers for every language I speak. I am one of many trying to find an opportunity in a country suffering and unable to provide its own people with sufficient jobs. Why am I here? Why don’t I go back to Belgium? Back to more security, to my family. A very good question. I have asked myself that question many times and I have narrowed the answer down to three answers: 1. I like the challenge; 2. I am just crazy; 3. I am in search of my personal happiness. Who knows! But I am here and I feel that my time has come, I feel that my efforts were not in vain and are finally paying off.

Do I feel calm and without worries? Of course not. I worry every day, about money, paying the bills, job security, paying my loans, about what I really want, about life, but I try never to let these feelings dominate me and who I am. And always remember, never ever give bad influences the chance to interfere with your struggles or worries. Even when you feel alone with no support, if you need someone and you look for it online or offline you will find an honest and truthful shoulder to lean on.

Seven years since my life has changed, seven days since my internship has started. Thanks to good connections I have gotten the chance to enter into a real professional environment where I am learning a lot. I will make a lot of copies like expected from a good intern, be bored and feel used from time to time but I will also get the opportunity to get a lot of input from very experienced people, meet some challenging work and finally show that I am here, that I have something to offer and that, using curriculum terminology, I could be a real asset to the company.

Talk to you soon about the Fabbri way of life!

The Virtual Deadly Sins: Chapter II – Gluttony

According to Wikipedia Gluttony (Latin: gula) derives from the Latin gluttire meaning to gulp down or swallow, over-indulgence and over-consumption of food, drink, or wealth items to the point of extravagance or waste.

Today the moment has come that you can sit down in your chair and satisfy this deadly sin without moving your feet but by just clicking the right buttons. One small problem you need a steady monthly income to finance it. No money, no way you can continue living the dream of staying at home and using the global network as your toy to satisfy you senses. People like to eat, to drink, use their senses, taste, touch and smell and most of us prefer to do it in company. In one of my first articles I mentioned the movie The Net, a movie from 1995 with Sandra Bullock working and living at home as a computer programmer without seeing the outside world. She would order everything online and only a few people really knew she existed. Some called the movie science fiction but today, 20 years later, it has become reality.

A creative sin sometimes needs some problem solving

Pizzabo.it, cosaordino.it, justeat.it, are just a small series of websites available to you to order in after a long day of hard work. Just imagine having planned a dinner party for 10 people at your place at 9:00pm but you finish working at 7:00pm. What stops you from ordering in and taking all the credit for it. You arrive home at 7:30pm, order online, receive a message that your order will arrive within 45 minutes, take a long shower, prepare the table and then dinner arrives. Okay you will spend a little bit more than if you go to the grocery store but who cares, just this once. You arrange everything, reheat it in the oven, get a little bit dirty and then the door bell rings. You are relaxed and can enjoy a wonderful evening. But remember Gluttony is a sin and sins can be punished.

What will you do if your order doesn’t arrive in time? I have a nice trick for that, take some pans and pots and burn something, when your guests arrive you just put up your saddest face and tell them you burnt dinner and had to order in. Your problem solving techniques will be appreciated.

By the way did you know that in Bologna there is also something called Drinking-Bo? If you are worried about lack of alcoholic and nonalcoholic drinks you can rely on them to provide you with the necessary fluids to keep your party going. Should I say it or should I not? One point of criticism: there is no age limit control to this kind of service, as long as you pay no questions are asked, don’t ask don’t tell policy.

Feed yourself online while you can

I like cooking, I like spending time in the kitchen but I have to admit sometimes I don’t have time to do the groceries and without the right ingredients it’s not always that easy to prepare something special for your loved one. The virtual world has almost no limits: do the groceries online. From time to time to fulfill my desires, to give in to some of my sins (including laziness) I go online, open the website of my regular grocery store, publicity alert, Esselunga, sit down in my couch, open a bottle of wine and shop online. In less than a week they bring everything on my list for just a small fee to my doorsteps, no matter where I live in my city, no matter which floor I am. I don’t need to stress to find the time, I don’t need to take the car, I don’t need to wait in line, I can just continue to sip on my glass of wine, relax with my loved ones, and choose the right recipe to prepare for a perfect evening.

Use these services wisely, use them to gain extra time to relax and to be able to organize a quite and romantic evening with your loved one or a successful night to remember with friends and family.
